June is Men’s Health Month—a time to focus not only on physical health but also on the emotional well-being of men. Mental health challenges don’t discriminate by gender, yet men are statistically less likely to seek therapy. As a licensed mental health counselor serving North Carolina (and beyond), I want to shine a light on the silent struggles many men face—and how therapy can help interrupt that cycle.

Why Don’t Men Seek Help?

Many men grow up hearing messages like “man up,” “don’t cry,” or “deal with it.” These societal expectations discourage emotional expression and reinforce the stigma that seeking therapy is a sign of weakness.

But here's the truth: asking for help is a sign of strength, not failure.

The Mental Health Struggles Men Face

Some of the most common issues men deal with include:

  • Depression that often presents as irritability or anger

  • Anxiety masked by overworking or substance use

  • Burnout and emotional disconnection in work or family life

  • Suicidal thoughts, particularly among middle-aged men—the highest-risk group

Signs to Watch For

Whether you're a partner, employer, or friend, watch for:

  • Withdrawal from social life

  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs

  • Trouble sleeping or concentrating

  • Physical complaints with no clear cause

What Can Help?

Here are a few tools that support mental wellness:

  • Routine self-check-ins: Ask “How am I really doing?”

  • Journaling: A safe, private way to process thoughts

  • Physical activity: Regular movement is proven to ease anxiety and depression

  • Therapy: A safe space to explore what’s behind the stress

How Therapy Supports Men

Men often benefit from a solution-focused approach in therapy—goal-oriented conversations, stress management skills, and strategies to navigate relationships and identity. Whether you’re navigating work pressure, a relationship shift, or a personal crossroads, therapy helps you show up fully.

I offer therapy services for individuals, families, and workplaces—with online sessions available. If you're unsure whether therapy is the right step, reach out for a no-pressure consultation.

You’re Not Alone

This Men’s Health Month, let’s normalize mental health check-ins for men. If you're struggling or supporting someone who is, know that help is available—and healing is possible.
