🌿 What to Expect When Starting Counseling

Starting counseling can feel like a big step. Our goal is to make the process as comfortable, respectful, and supportive as possible.

Your first session focuses on understanding your concerns, goals, and what brings you to counseling. We take time to listen, answer questions, and collaborate with you on next steps at a pace that feels right for you.

You can expect:

  • A confidential, nonjudgmental environment

  • A trauma-informed, culturally responsive approach

  • Evidence-based counseling tailored to your individual needs

  • Clear guidance on scheduling, telehealth options, and the counseling process

Whether you are seeking support for anxiety, depression, trauma, family concerns, or life transitions, counseling is a collaborative process designed to support your well-being and personal growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What happens during my first session?
A: Your first session is an opportunity for us to meet and get to know each other. We'll discuss what brings you in, your background, and what you hope to achieve through counseling. This is also a time for you to ask questions about my approach and how we can work together. Sessions typically last 50-60 minutes.

Q: How long does counseling typically take?
A: The length of counseling varies greatly from person to person and depends on your specific situation and goals. Some people find what they need in just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. We'll discuss this together and adjust our approach as needed.

Q: Is everything I share confidential?
A: Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of our work together. What you share in session remains private with limited exceptions related to safety concerns. I'm happy to explain the specifics of confidentiality and its limits during our first meeting.

Q: What if I'm nervous about coming to therapy?
A: It's completely normal to feel nervous before your first session. Many people feel this way, and those feelings often ease once we begin. I'm here to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can be yourself.

Q: Can you help with specific issues?
A: I work with a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, grief, relationship concerns, life transitions, and organizational development. Feel free to reach out and let me know what you're facing.

Q: Do you offer online sessions?
A: Yes, I offer both in-person and virtual counseling sessions to fit your preferences and schedule. Online sessions provide flexibility and accessibility while maintaining the same quality of care.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?
A: I ask for at least 24 hours notice if you need to reschedule or cancel an appointment. This helps ensure we can offer that time to other clients. I understand that emergencies happen, and we can discuss any special circumstances.

Q: What if we don't feel like we're a good fit?
A: The relationship between counselor and client is important. If you don't feel we're working well together, I'm happy to discuss this openly. Your comfort and progress are what matter most, and I can help you find a provider who may be a better match if needed.
